Why red eyes appear in photos

The red-eye effect in photography occurs when one uses a photographic flash close to the camera lens in ambient low light. The red is the reflection of the light on the retina of the eyes.

How to fix red eyes through Photoshop

A perfect picture could be ruined by this red-eye effect. However, there are ways to remove it. You can actually edit it in Photoshop. You have to open the image and then duplicate the image and close the original. For Photoshop 6 and earlier versions, go to view and then New view. Zoom out the windows and set the other window view to 100%. You have to arrange the window in a way in which you can see both the zoomed view and the 100% view. You then have to create a new layer. You can use the eye dropper to pick up the color from the iris. Paint over the red part of the eye. You then have to go to Filters>Blur>Gaussian and soften the edges by making it 1 pixel blur. You then have to set the layer mode to Saturation.

Other red eye removal editing techniques

You can use the Windows Live Photo Gallery for red eye removal. The ways to do it is very easy. You just have to choose the Fix Red Eye from the editing menu. Draw a rectangle around the eye by clicking the upper-left corner of the eye with the mouse and dragging the cursor to the lower right corner of the eye.
